O Sanctissima
O Sanctissima is a traditional Marian hymn associated with Sicily and often called the Sicilian Mariners’ Hymn. Its authorship is uncertain, and versions of the melody and text appeared in print around the turn of the nineteenth century. The hymn praises the holiness, tenderness, and beauty of the Blessed Virgin Mary while repeatedly asking for her prayers. Catholics sing it at Marian devotions, processions, parish celebrations, and during the months especially dedicated to Our Lady. Its simple petitions make it suitable for personal prayer, especially in sorrow, danger, or preparation for death.
In Latin
O sanctissima, O piissima, Dulcis Virgo Maria! Mater amata, intemerata, Ora, ora pro nobis. Sicut lilium inter spinas, Sic Maria inter filias. Mater amata, intemerata, Ora, ora pro nobis. In miseria, in angustia, Ora, Virgo, pro nobis. Pro nobis ora in mortis hora, Ora, ora pro nobis.
When to pray it: Pray or sing this hymn during Marian devotions, in times of distress, or when asking Our Lady’s intercession.
