Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest instead of directly to God?
Because Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive sins, and the Church has exercised it ever since.
How do I go to confession? I haven't been in years.
Examine your conscience, tell the priest how long it has been, confess your sins simply, pray the Act of Contrition, receive absolution.
Do Catholics really believe the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus?
Yes. Christ is truly, really, and substantially present under the appearances of bread and wine.
Why can't non-Catholics receive Communion at Mass?
Because receiving the Eucharist is a sign of full communion in faith that does not yet exist.
Moral Life
What is the difference between mortal and venial sin?
Mortal sin destroys charity in the soul and requires confession; venial sin wounds it and is forgiven in many ways.
Is it really a sin to miss Mass on Sunday?
Deliberately missing Sunday Mass without a serious reason is grave matter. Illness, caring for the sick, and genuine impossibility excuse.
What does the Catholic Church teach about abortion, and why?
Every human life is sacred from conception. Direct abortion is always gravely wrong. The Church also offers mercy and healing to all who have been involved.
Why does the Church oppose contraception?
Because the marital act has two inseparable meanings, union and procreation, and contraception deliberately breaks them apart.
What does the Church teach about marriage, divorce, and annulment?
Marriage between baptized persons is a sacrament, one and indissoluble. An annulment declares that a valid marriage never existed.

Mary & the Saints
Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints? Isn't that idolatry?
We ask them to pray for us, exactly as we ask friends on earth. Only God is worshiped.
What is the Immaculate Conception? Is it about Jesus' birth?
It is Mary's conception, not Jesus'. She was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her existence, by Christ's grace.
What is the Assumption of Mary, and is it in the Bible?
At the end of her earthly life Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. It is not narrated in Scripture but is rooted in it and in Tradition.

Is the Bible alone the rule of faith? What about Tradition?
Scripture and Tradition together, interpreted by the Magisterium, form one deposit of faith. The Bible itself never claims to be the sole rule.
Where is the pope in the Bible?
In Matthew 16, where Jesus makes Peter the rock and gives him the keys of the kingdom, an office that passes to his successors.
If God is good, why does He allow suffering?
God permits evil only because He can draw a greater good from it, and He answered suffering not with an explanation but by entering it on the Cross.
Doctrine
What does papal infallibility actually mean?
The pope is protected from error only when he defines a doctrine of faith or morals for the whole Church. It does not mean he is sinless or always right.
What is purgatory, and is it in the Bible?
A final purification for those who die in grace but still imperfectly purified, so they may enter the holiness of heaven.
What are indulgences? Didn't the Church sell them?
The remission of temporal punishment due to forgiven sin, granted through the Church's treasury of merit. Selling them was an abuse, condemned by Trent.
Why can't women be ordained priests?
Because Christ chose only men as apostles, and the Church has no authority to change what He established. It is not about women's dignity or ability.
What is the Trinity, and how can God be three and one?
One God in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each fully God, distinct but not divided. It is a mystery revealed by Christ, not a contradiction.
Can non-Catholics be saved? What about people who never heard of Jesus?
Salvation comes only through Christ and His Church, but God can save those who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel and sincerely seek Him.
