Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

This traditional prayer is associated with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and was widely distributed on older Lourdes prayer cards. Its author is not usually identified. The prayer recalls the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858. Mary revealed herself there as the Immaculate Conception. Catholics pray this prayer to seek Our Lady’s maternal intercession for healing, consolation, conversion, and help in suffering. Its confidence reflects the Church’s teaching that Mary continues to intercede for the faithful as their mother in the order of grace, as described in CCC 969.

O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, health of the sick, refuge of sinners, comfortress of the afflicted, thou knowest my wants, my troubles, my sufferings; deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, thou wast pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence thou dispensest thy favors, and where many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore thy maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests. I will endeavor to imitate thy virtues, that I may one day share thy glory, and bless thee in eternity. Amen.

When to pray it: Pray it when seeking Our Lady’s intercession for the sick, the afflicted, or any serious personal need.
