Prayer to St. Christopher
This traditional Motorist’s Prayer became widely known through Catholic prayer cards and Saint Christopher medals used by drivers in the twentieth century. Saint Christopher has long been honored as the patron of travelers, and his image is often carried in cars or worn as a medal. The prayer asks God for steadiness, vigilance, charity, and freedom from reckless speed. Its closing invocation seeks Saint Christopher’s intercession for protection on the road. Catholics may pray it before driving, especially before a long journey, while remembering that the saints join their prayers to ours, as taught in CCC 2683.
Grant me, O Lord, a steady hand and watchful eye,
That no one shall suffer hurt as I pass by.
Thou givest life, I pray no act of mine
May take away or mar that gift of Thine.
Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear me company
From foolish folk and all calamity.
Teach me to use my car for others’ need;
Nor miss through witless love of speed
The beauties of Thy world; that thus I may
With joy and courtesy go on my way.
St. Christopher, protect us.
