Prayer to St. Joseph for Protection

This traditional prayer seeks the powerful intercession of Saint Joseph before the throne of God. It is often circulated with the claim that it dates from the fiftieth year of Our Lord, although that attribution cannot be historically verified. The closing petition reflects Saint Joseph’s honored role as patron of a happy death. Catholic tradition holds that Joseph died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, making him a special protector of the dying. Catholics pray this prayer for spiritual blessings, protection in their needs, and the grace of final perseverance. The Church encourages the faithful to prepare prayerfully for the hour of death, as taught in CCC 1014.

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by thy powerful intercession, and obtain for me from thy Divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; so that, having engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating thee and Jesus asleep in thine arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near thy heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

When to pray it: Pray this prayer when seeking Saint Joseph’s protection or asking for the grace of a holy and peaceful death.
