What do Catholics believe about the end times?

Catholics believe that Jesus Christ will return visibly in glory, raise the dead, judge humanity, and bring God’s saving plan to completion. Evil and death will be defeated, and creation will be renewed.

The end times have already begun. The New Testament calls the period inaugurated by Christ’s Incarnation, death, Resurrection, and Ascension the “last days” (Heb 1:1-2). Christ already reigns at the Father’s right hand, although every enemy has not yet been visibly subjected to Him (1 Cor 15:25-26; CCC 668-672). The exact date of His return is unknown. Jesus warns against date setting and calls His disciples to remain watchful (Mt 24:36, 42).

A final trial will come. Before Christ’s return, the Church will face a final trial that will shake the faith of many. A supreme religious deception associated with the Antichrist will offer an apparent human solution in place of God and His truth (CCC 675). The Church rejects millenarianism, especially attempts to identify God’s final kingdom with an earthly political triumph or a man made utopia (CCC 676). The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom through a final Passover patterned on Christ’s suffering and victory (CCC 677).

Christ will return and the dead will rise. The Second Coming will be public and glorious, not merely symbolic or private. All the dead will rise bodily, those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil to judgment (Jn 5:28-29; CCC 998-1001). The risen body will be truly our own body, transformed and reunited with the soul. Christ’s return will reveal His lordship over history and creation.

Every person will be judged. Each person faces a particular judgment at death and receives an eternal destiny according to his relationship with Christ (CCC 1021-1022). At the end of history, the final judgment will reveal the truth of every person’s deeds and all their consequences (Mt 25:31-46; CCC 1038-1041). Those who die in God’s grace will share eternal life. Those who freely and definitively reject God remain separated from Him in hell.

God will make all things new. After the final judgment, God will renew creation in “new heavens and a new earth” (Rev 21:1-5; CCC 1042-1050). The redeemed will live with God, see Him face to face, and share a perfect communion of love. Human history will reach its God given fulfillment, with no more death, mourning, or pain.

Prepare by living faithfully today. Receive the sacraments, repent of sin, pray, forgive, serve those in need, and entrust the future to Christ. Christian hope rests on His victory, not on decoding headlines.
