How often should a Catholic go to confession?

A Catholic should go to confession as soon as reasonably possible after committing a mortal sin. Even without mortal sin, regular confession, often monthly, is a healthy Catholic practice.

What the Church requires. Every Catholic who has reached the age of reason must faithfully confess serious sins at least once a year (CCC 1457; Canon 989). This annual requirement concerns mortal sins. Venial sins do not strictly have to be confessed, although the Church strongly recommends confessing them regularly (CCC 1458). The annual minimum is a floor, not a recommended schedule for the whole spiritual life.

When mortal sin is involved. Mortal sin requires grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent (CCC 1857). A person conscious of mortal sin should not receive Holy Communion before sacramental confession and absolution, except in the rare situation described by Church law when there is a grave reason and no opportunity to confess (Canon 916). Perfect contrition can reconcile a person to God before confession, but it must include the firm intention to confess as soon as possible (CCC 1452). It does not create permission to postpone confession casually.

Why confess venial sins. Regular confession helps form the conscience, resist temptation, heal harmful habits, and grow in humility. The sacrament gives grace specifically ordered toward reconciliation and spiritual strengthening. Confessing recurring impatience, gossip, dishonesty, lustful thoughts deliberately entertained, or failures in prayer can reveal patterns that are easy to excuse. The Church teaches that regular confession of venial sins helps us fight against evil tendencies and progress in the life of the Spirit (CCC 1458).

How often is wise. The Church does not command one schedule for everyone. Monthly confession works well for many Catholics. Some go every two weeks, especially when fighting a deeply rooted sin or following the advice of a spiritual director. Others may go every six weeks or every few months. Scrupulous people should avoid confessing compulsively and follow the guidance of one trustworthy confessor.

A practical rule. Go promptly after mortal sin, and choose a regular schedule even when you are conscious only of venial sins. Put the next confession date on your calendar. Before going, make a brief examination of conscience, ask the Holy Spirit for honesty, and trust Christ, who gave His apostles authority to forgive sins (Jn 20:22-23).
