What about Galileo? Is the Church against science?
Church authorities treated Galileo unjustly, but the case was a human failure, not Catholic doctrine opposing scientific investigation.
Galileo was wrongly condemned by Church authorities in 1633. His case was a serious failure of judgment, but it does not show that Catholic faith and science are enemies.
What happened. Galileo’s telescopic observations challenged the older Ptolemaic picture of the heavens and supported important parts of the Copernican system. In 1616 he was warned not to hold or defend heliocentrism as established fact. After publishing his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, he was tried by the Roman Inquisition, required to recant, and sentenced to house arrest. The proceedings were influenced by scientific uncertainty, biblical interpretation, politics, personality conflicts, and Galileo’s difficult relationship with Pope Urban VIII.
Where Church authorities erred. Galileo had strong evidence against the older geocentric model, although he did not yet possess a conclusive physical demonstration of the earth’s motion. One of his proposed proofs, based on the tides, was incorrect. Church officials nevertheless exceeded their competence by treating a disputed interpretation of Scripture as though it settled an empirical scientific question. His condemnation was a disciplinary judgment, not an infallible definition of faith. St. John Paul II later recognized the errors and “tragic mutual incomprehension” involved in the case.
What Catholicism teaches about science. Truth cannot contradict truth. The Catechism teaches that sound scientific research cannot truly conflict with faith because both created reality and divine revelation come from God (CCC 159). It also praises scientific study of the universe and human origins for greatly enriching knowledge (CCC 283). Catholic clergy and institutions have made major scientific contributions, including universities, observatories, genetics, astronomy, and the development of the Big Bang theory by the priest and physicist Georges Lemaître.
How Scripture should be read. The Bible teaches without error the truth God intended for our salvation, but its human authors used particular literary forms and ordinary ways of describing nature (CCC 101-107). Scripture may speak of the sun rising without intending to teach astronomy. The Second Vatican Council taught that interpreters must consider literary genre, historical setting, and the author’s intention (Dei Verbum 12). St. Augustine had warned centuries before Galileo against making Christianity look foolish by attaching the faith to careless claims about nature.
What to take from the case. Catholics should neither deny Galileo’s mistreatment nor turn one trial into a false story of permanent warfare between faith and science. Study evidence honestly, read Scripture according to the Church’s sound principles, and trust that every genuine truth leads back to God.
