What do Catholics believe about heaven?

Heaven is perfect and everlasting communion with the Holy Trinity. Those who die in God's grace and friendship, fully purified, see Him face to face and share His happiness forever.

What heaven is. Heaven is more than a beautiful location or an endless extension of earthly life. It is the fulfillment of our deepest purpose: knowing and loving God without sin, fear, suffering, or separation. The Catechism calls it the "ultimate end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings" and the state of supreme happiness (CCC 1024). Jesus described it as life, light, peace, the Father's house, and the wedding feast (Jn 14:2-3; Mt 25:10).

The vision of God. The heart of heaven is the beatific vision. The blessed see God "face to face" and know Him in a direct way made possible by His grace (1 Cor 13:12; CCC 1028). They do not become gods by nature or dissolve into God. They remain distinct human persons, but they share in divine life and love. Every good relationship is healed and perfected within communion with the Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels, and all the saints.

What happens after death. Each person undergoes the particular judgment at death and receives an eternal destiny according to his or her relationship with Christ (CCC 1021-1022). Those who die perfectly purified enter heaven immediately. Those who die in God's friendship but still need purification undergo purgatory before entering heaven (CCC 1030). At the resurrection of the dead, the blessed will receive glorified bodies. Human salvation will then include both soul and body, as God intended.

What life there will be like. Scripture promises that God will wipe away every tear and that death, mourning, pain, and sin will be no more (Rev 21:3-4). Heaven will never be boring because God is infinite beauty, truth, and goodness. The saints actively love, worship, and reign with Christ. They also intercede for the Church on earth (CCC 956). We cannot imagine heaven fully, but every authentic earthly joy points faintly toward it.

How to seek heaven. Heaven is God's free gift, received through Christ rather than earned apart from grace (Eph 2:8-10). Respond through faith, Baptism, prayer, the sacraments, works of charity, and repentance after sin. Ask God daily for perseverance. Christ has prepared a place for His people, and He calls us to live now as citizens of that heavenly kingdom.
