What is a sacramental, and how is it different from a sacrament?

A sacramental is a sacred sign instituted by the Church, such as a blessing, holy water, or a blessed medal. Unlike the seven sacraments, sacramentals do not confer sacramental grace by their own action.

What a sacramental is. Sacramentals resemble the sacraments and direct us toward them. Through the prayer of the Church, they prepare us to receive grace and help sanctify the circumstances of ordinary life (CCC 1667). Common examples include blessings of people, meals, homes, rosaries, crucifixes, and religious medals. Holy water recalls Baptism. The Sign of the Cross places our thoughts and actions under the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

How sacraments are different. The sacraments were instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church. They are efficacious signs that truly confer the grace they signify when they are validly celebrated and received without placing an obstacle in the way (CCC 1127-1131). Baptism actually cleanses from sin and gives new life in Christ. The Eucharist truly contains Christ Himself, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity (CCC 1374). Sacramentals were instituted by the Church and work through her intercession and the faithful disposition of the person using them (CCC 1667, 1670).

What sacramentals do. Blessings praise God and ask for His gifts. Some blessings permanently dedicate a person or object to sacred service, such as the consecration of a church or altar (CCC 1671-1672). Exorcisms are also sacramentals in which the Church asks Christ to protect or free a person or object from the power of the evil one (CCC 1673). Their power comes from Christ and the Church's prayer, not from the material object itself.

What sacramentals do not do. A rosary, medal, scapular, or bottle of holy water is never a charm. Treating a sacred object as though it guaranteed protection regardless of faith, repentance, or obedience would be superstition (CCC 2111). The woman healed after touching Christ's garment was saved through faith in Him, not through a magical object (Mk 5:27-34).

In practice. Keep sacramentals visible and use them prayerfully. Bless your meals, make the Sign of the Cross, place a crucifix in your home, and use holy water with faith. Let each sacramental lead you toward Christ, especially toward Confession and the Eucharist.
