What is a spiritual communion?

A spiritual communion is a prayer by which a person expresses faith in Jesus present in the Eucharist and asks to be united with Him when sacramental Communion is not possible.

What it means. In a spiritual communion, you tell Jesus that you believe He is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, that you love Him, and that you desire deeper union with Him. Jesus calls Himself the bread of life and promises that whoever comes to Him will not hunger (Jn 6:35). This prayer rests on that promise and directs the heart toward the Eucharist, the “source and summit of the Christian life” (CCC 1324).

When people make one. A spiritual communion can be made when someone cannot attend Mass because of illness, distance, imprisonment, lack of a priest, or another serious reason. It can also be made by someone attending Mass who cannot receive sacramentally. Catholics watching a broadcast Mass often pray one at the time Communion is distributed. St. John Paul II praised the practice of spiritual communion, which has been recommended by saints and spiritual teachers for centuries in the Church (Ecclesia de Eucharistia 34).

What it does and does not do. A spiritual communion can deepen faith, love, repentance, and desire for Christ. Its fruit depends on the person’s openness to grace. It is not sacramental reception of the Eucharist and does not replace attendance at Sunday Mass when attendance is possible. It also does not replace confession for someone conscious of mortal sin. Such a person should make an act of contrition and resolve to go to confession as soon as possible (CCC 1451-1452).

How to make one. No fixed formula is required. You can pray in your own words, or use a traditional prayer such as: “Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You and desire to receive You. Since I cannot receive You sacramentally now, come spiritually into my heart. Unite me more closely to You, and keep me faithful to Your grace.” Then remain silent for a moment and speak to Christ personally.

A practical habit. Make a spiritual communion whenever you cannot receive the Eucharist, and even during personal prayer between Masses. Keep the desire concrete. Prepare for your next sacramental Communion through repentance, prayer, and loving attention to the Lord who gives Himself to His Church.
