Who is St. Michael the Archangel?

St. Michael is a holy angel who appears in Scripture as a defender of God’s people and an enemy of Satan. Catholics honor him and ask his protection, while worship belongs to God alone.

Who he is. Angels are spiritual, personal beings created by God. They possess intelligence and will, glorify God, and serve His saving plan (CCC 328-330). Michael’s name means, “Who is like God?” It expresses the truth that no creature can rival the Creator. Scripture explicitly calls Michael “the archangel” (Jude 9), a title indicating authority among the angels.

Where he appears in Scripture. In the Book of Daniel, Michael is called “one of the chief princes” and the protector of God’s people (Dan 10:13, 21; 12:1). In Revelation, “Michael and his angels” fight the dragon, who is identified as the Devil and Satan. The dragon is defeated and cast down (Rev 12:7-9). Michael’s victory comes from God’s power, not from an independent power of his own.

Why Catholics call him a saint. The word “saint” means holy one. It can refer to human beings in heaven, but the holy angels also live forever in God’s presence. They remained faithful when Satan and the other fallen angels rejected God (CCC 391-393). Catholics therefore honor Michael as St. Michael, although he is an angel rather than a human being. The Church also names Gabriel and Raphael among the archangels in her liturgy.

Why Catholics ask for his help. Angels minister according to God’s providence, and human life is surrounded by their protection and intercession (CCC 334-336). Devotion to St. Michael asks him to defend the Church, guard souls, and oppose the influence of demons. This is intercession, not worship. Every angelic victory depends entirely upon Christ, who has conquered sin and death.

In practice. Catholics often pray the Prayer to St. Michael, composed under Pope Leo XIII: “St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.” The prayer should encourage confidence in God, resistance to temptation, and use of the ordinary means of grace. Pray, receive the sacraments, reject occult practices, and call upon St. Michael when facing temptation or spiritual fear.
