Who was St. Peter?

St. Peter was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles and the visible leader Christ appointed among them. Catholics recognize him as the first pope and honor him as a martyr and foundational witness to the Resurrection.

His call and new name. Peter was originally named Simon. He was a fisherman from Galilee and the brother of Andrew. Jesus called him to leave his nets and become a “fisher of men” (Mt 4:18-20). Jesus gave Simon the Aramaic name Cephas, translated Peter, meaning rock (Jn 1:42). This new name expressed the mission Christ intended to give him.

His special role. When Peter confessed, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” Jesus replied, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” Christ then gave him the keys of the kingdom and authority to bind and loose (Mt 16:16-19). The keys recall the office of royal steward in Isaiah 22:20-22. Peter did not replace Christ, who remains the Church’s cornerstone and supreme shepherd. He received a real pastoral office under Christ for the unity and protection of the Church (CCC 552-553).

His weakness and restoration. Peter was sincere but often impulsive. During Jesus’ Passion, he denied three times that he knew Him (Lk 22:54-62). After the Resurrection, Jesus gave Peter three opportunities to profess his love and commanded him, “Feed my sheep” (Jn 21:15-17). Peter’s failure did not make sin harmless. It showed the power of repentance, forgiveness, and grace. Christ entrusted His flock to a man who had learned humility through mercy.

His leadership and martyrdom. Peter preached publicly at Pentecost, welcomed converts, performed miracles, and guided the early Church through major disputes (Acts 2:14-41; 10:34-48; 15:7-11). Ancient Christian testimony holds that he later ministered in Rome and was martyred there under Emperor Nero, traditionally by crucifixion. His tomb is venerated beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. The Bishop of Rome succeeds to Peter’s pastoral office as the visible source of unity among the bishops and faithful (CCC 880-882).

In practice. Peter is a saint for people who love Christ yet know their own weakness. Ask for his prayers when you need courage to confess the faith, humility after failure, or fidelity in leadership. Follow his example by repenting quickly and answering Christ’s call again: love Him, strengthen others, and care for those He places in your charge.
