Why does the Church oppose same-sex marriage?

Because marriage is a lifelong union of one man and one woman, ordered to their good and the generation of children.

The Church opposes same-sex marriage because marriage has a God-given meaning: it is the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, ordered to their union and to the generation and upbringing of children. Respect for every person does not require redefining marriage.

What marriage is. Scripture presents sexual difference as part of God's design: "male and female he created them" (Gen 1:27). Man and woman are called to become "one flesh" and to be fruitful (Gen 1:28; 2:24). Jesus confirms this pattern when teaching about marriage, joining the creation of male and female to the permanent marital bond (Mt 19:4-6). The Church therefore defines marriage as a covenant in which a man and woman establish a partnership of their whole lives, ordered to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children (CCC 1601).

Why sexual difference matters. A husband and wife give themselves to each other in a bodily union that is naturally capable of generating new life, even when conception does not occur because of age or infertility. Their sexual difference is part of the kind of union marriage is. Two men or two women cannot form that same one-flesh, procreative union. Affection, commitment, and legal agreements can be genuine, but they do not by themselves create a marriage.

What the Church teaches about persons. Every person has inviolable dignity and must be treated with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Unjust discrimination, contempt, bullying, and violence against people who experience same-sex attraction are wrong (CCC 2358). Experiencing an attraction is not itself a personal sin. Moral responsibility concerns freely chosen acts. The Church teaches that sexual acts between persons of the same sex cannot express the marital union intended by God and therefore are gravely sinful (CCC 2357). The same call to chastity applies to everyone according to his or her state of life (CCC 2348, 2359).

Why civil law matters. Laws teach society what marriage is and shape expectations about parenthood, sexual conduct, and family life. The Church supports the legal recognition and protection of marriage as the union of man and woman. Catholics should express this conviction without hatred, ridicule, or unjust treatment. A person can defend traditional marriage while remaining a faithful friend, loving relative, or compassionate coworker.

If this teaching touches your life personally, do not conclude that Christ has rejected you. He calls every person to conversion, chastity, friendship, prayer, and holiness. Seek a faithful priest, sound Catholic community, and friendships that help you live the truth without isolation or shame.
