St. Alphonsus Liguori

St. Alphonsus combined careful moral theology, patient pastoral care, and missionary preaching among the neglected rural poor.
The story
Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, at Marianella near Naples. He belonged to a noble family and received an extensive education. Exceptionally gifted, he earned doctorates in civil and canon law while still young and became a successful lawyer. After losing an important case in 1723, he left legal practice and discerned a call to the priesthood. His father strongly resisted this decision. Alphonsus was ordained a priest in Naples on December 21, 1726.
As a priest, Alphonsus preached in plain language and heard confessions with patience. He organized evening chapels where working people could pray and learn the faith. During a visit to the hill town of Scala, he encountered rural communities with little regular pastoral care. On November 9, 1732, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly called the Redemptorists. Its members were to preach missions, especially among poor and neglected people.
Alphonsus also became one of the most influential Catholic moral theologians. He opposed both laxity, which minimized sin, and rigorism, which placed crushing burdens on consciences. His major works included "Moral Theology," "The Glories of Mary," and "Visits to the Most Blessed Sacrament." Pope Clement XIII appointed him bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti in 1762. There he reformed the seminary, cared for the poor, corrected abuses, and continued preaching despite severe arthritis and declining health.
Alphonsus resigned his diocese in 1775. During his final years, political interference in the Redemptorist rule caused a painful division within the congregation. He endured this trial, together with illness and periods of spiritual anguish, until his death at Pagani on August 1, 1787. Pope Pius VII beatified him in 1816, and Pope Gregory XVI canonized him in 1839. Pope Pius IX declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1871. His memorial is observed in the General Roman Calendar on August 1.
What Alphonsus teaches
St. Alphonsus shows that sound moral teaching must unite truth with patience and mercy. A well-formed conscience does not excuse sin or surrender to fear, but seeks prudent judgment in the light of Christ, as taught in CCC 1783.
