St. Angela Merici
“Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”
St. Angela Merici founded the Company of St. Ursula, opening a new form of consecrated life and promoting the Christian formation of girls.
The story
Angela Merici was born around 1474 at Desenzano del Garda, in territory belonging to the Republic of Venice. Orphaned while still young, she lived with relatives in Salò. She became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and embraced prayer, penance, simplicity, and service. Later accounts describe visions that encouraged her vocation, but their details belong to pious tradition and cannot all be independently verified.
Angela returned to Desenzano and gathered girls for instruction in the Christian faith. She later moved to Brescia, where civic and religious upheaval had left many families in need. Her influence came through personal holiness rather than wealth or official position. She counseled women, reconciled disputes, and encouraged laypeople to live the Gospel within their ordinary responsibilities. During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she temporarily lost her sight. Early biographical tradition says that her sight returned during the homeward journey. In 1525 she traveled to Rome for the Jubilee. Pope Clement VII reportedly invited her to remain and direct charitable work, but she returned to Brescia.
On November 25, 1535, Angela and a small group of women formed the Company of St. Ursula. Its members consecrated themselves to Christ while generally remaining in their homes rather than entering a cloister. Angela wrote a Rule, Counsels, and Legacies to guide them. She stressed prayer, maternal charity, freedom from coercion, and attention to each person's circumstances. The Company was approved by the local bishop in 1536. Angela was elected its mother and leader in 1537.
Angela died in Brescia on January 27, 1540. After her death, some Ursuline communities gradually adopted common life and became especially associated with the education of girls. These later developments grew from her foundation, although her original company was not organized as a conventional teaching order. Pope Clement XIII beatified Angela on April 30, 1768. Pope Pius VII canonized her on May 24, 1807. Her optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is kept on January 27.
What Angela teaches
St. Angela teaches that consecration to God can bear fruit through patient formation, wise friendship, and respect for each person's vocation. CCC 922 describes women who dedicate themselves to the Lord with greater freedom of heart and service. Ask for wisdom to form the young by truth, example, and charity.
