St. Apollinaris

Honored as Ravenna's first bishop and martyr, Apollinaris established a Christian community that endured persecution and preserved his memory for centuries.

The story

St. Apollinaris is honored as the first bishop of Ravenna, but few details of his life can be established with certainty. A later tradition made him a native of Antioch, a disciple of St. Peter, and a missionary sent to Ravenna during the first century. Those particulars belong to later hagiography and cannot be confirmed from contemporary evidence. Modern accounts commonly place his ministry or death in the second century.

The most important early testimony comes from St. Peter Chrysologus, bishop of Ravenna in the fifth century. In a sermon honoring Apollinaris, Peter described him as Ravenna's first bishop and as a shepherd who repeatedly suffered and shed his blood for the faith. This witness confirms that Apollinaris was already venerated locally as an apostolic founder and heroic confessor. The precise sequence of his imprisonments, tortures, journeys, and death found in later biographies is not historically recoverable.

Ravenna's Christians honored his tomb at Classe, the port outside the city. In the sixth century, a great basilica was built there and dedicated to him. The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe was consecrated in 549 by Bishop Maximian. Its surviving apse mosaic shows Apollinaris in prayer among twelve sheep, an image of the bishop standing with his flock before God. The basilica remains one of the clearest monuments to the strength and antiquity of his cult.

The Church venerates Apollinaris as a bishop and martyr because the ancient tradition consistently links his pastoral ministry with suffering for Christ. He belongs to the saints of the early Church whose public cult arose centuries before formal papal canonization procedures existed. His optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is observed on July 20. Although many details are uncertain, the central memory is firm: Ravenna's first shepherd preached the Gospel, endured persecution, and gave lasting witness to Christ.

What Apollinaris teaches

Apollinaris teaches that a bishop is called to remain with his flock when faith becomes costly. The shepherd's authority is expressed through service and self-giving, after the example of Christ in John 10:11. The pastoral office of bishops is described in CCC 886.
