Bl. Daniel Brottier

A Spiritan missionary and decorated military chaplain, Daniel Brottier rebuilt the Orphelins d'Auteuil to educate and prepare vulnerable boys for work.
The story
Daniel Brottier was born on September 7, 1876, at La Ferté-Saint-Cyr in France. He entered the seminary of Blois and was ordained a priest on October 22, 1899. After several years of teaching, he joined the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, commonly called the Spiritans. He hoped to serve in the foreign missions and was sent to Senegal in 1903.
In Senegal, Father Brottier worked at Saint-Louis and took part in plans for a cathedral at Dakar. Repeated attacks of illness forced him to return permanently to France in 1911. He continued supporting the Senegalese mission through organization and fundraising. When the First World War began in 1914, he volunteered as a military chaplain and served at the front with the French army. Soldiers remembered his presence under fire, his care for the wounded, and his readiness to hear confessions. He received the Croix de Guerre and was later made a member of the Legion of Honor.
In 1923, his superiors appointed him director of the Orphelins d'Auteuil in Paris. The institution, founded in the nineteenth century, cared for orphaned and disadvantaged boys but faced severe financial problems. Father Brottier expanded its housing, education, and vocational training. He sought not only to feed the boys but also to prepare them for dignified work through practical trades. He placed the work under the patronage of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, whose canonization occurred in 1925, and built a sanctuary in her honor at Auteuil.
Father Brottier combined energetic administration with sustained prayer. He appealed widely for donations, welcomed children from troubled circumstances, and helped establish a durable charitable network. His health remained fragile, and he died in Paris on February 28, 1936. St. John Paul II beatified him on November 25, 1984. His body, found notably preserved when examined in 1962, rests at the sanctuary of St. Thérèse in Auteuil. His beatification rests upon the Church's judgment of his heroic virtue and an approved miracle, not upon the condition of his remains.
What Bl. teaches
Bl. Daniel Brottier saw that charity must address both immediate suffering and a person's future. Care for vulnerable children fulfills the call to recognize Christ in the least of his brothers and sisters, as Matthew 25:40 and CCC 2447 teach.
