St. Francis of Paola
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
St. Francis of Paola founded the Minims, whose austere life of prayer, humility, and penance called Christians to deeper conversion.
The story
Francis was born at Paola in Calabria on March 27, 1416. His parents, Giacomo Martolilla and Vienna da Fuscaldo, were devout Catholics who had prayed for a child through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi. As a boy, Francis spent a year with Franciscan friars in fulfillment of a promise made by his parents. He later traveled with his family to Assisi, Rome, and other places of pilgrimage. The wealth and ambition he observed strengthened his desire for a simpler life.
About the age of fifteen, Francis withdrew to a cave near Paola. He lived as a hermit in prayer, manual labor, fasting, and solitude. Other men gradually joined him. They built cells and a chapel, forming a community first known as the Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi. Their life included poverty, humility, and a perpetual abstinence from meat and other animal products. This rigorous discipline was intended as a lasting practice of Lenten conversion, not as a rejection of the goodness of creation.
Church authorities approved the community in stages. Pope Sixtus IV granted recognition in 1474. The group later became known as the Order of Minims, a name expressing the brothers' desire to be the least in the household of faith. Francis gave the order a rule centered on prayer, penance, charity, and reconciliation. Reports of miracles surrounded him, although many details come from later devotional tradition and cannot be verified with certainty.
King Louis XI of France, gravely ill, asked that Francis come to him. At papal direction, Francis traveled to France in 1483. He did not promise the king a cure. Instead, he prepared Louis for a Christian death and helped reconcile him with God and others. Francis remained in France under Charles VIII and Louis XII, serving as a respected spiritual counselor while continuing his austere life. He died at Plessis-lès-Tours on April 2, 1507. Pope Leo X canonized him in 1519. His optional memorial is observed in the General Roman Calendar.
What Francis teaches
St. Francis teaches that penance is meant to open the heart to God and neighbor, not to display spiritual strength. The Church commends voluntary self-denial when it supports conversion and charity, as explained in CCC 1430. Christ promises, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
