St. Ignatius of Laconi

St. Ignatius of Laconi served Christ as a humble Capuchin brother who collected alms, counseled ordinary people, and shared generously with the poor.

The story

Vincenzo Peis was born on December 17, 1701, in Laconi, a village on the island of Sardinia. His family was poor and worked the land. He received little formal education, but he learned the faith at home and in his parish. As a young man, he sought admission to the Capuchins. Because of his weak health, his request was not immediately accepted.

In 1721, Vincenzo entered the Capuchin friary at Cagliari and received the name Ignatius. He became a lay brother rather than seeking ordination. After his novitiate, he performed ordinary household tasks in several friaries, including cooking and other manual work. His superiors recognized his reliability and eventually assigned him to collect food and alms for the friars and for people in need.

For roughly forty years, Brother Ignatius walked through the streets of Cagliari with his collecting sack. Merchants, laborers, children, and poor families came to know him. He accepted gifts without favoring the wealthy and distributed assistance with discretion. People also approached him for prayer and simple spiritual counsel. His influence did not come from academic learning or public office. It came from a life of prayer, honesty, penance, and attentive charity.

Ignatius remained obedient to the Capuchin rhythm of common prayer and fraternity. As his sight failed near the end of his life, he could no longer make his customary rounds. He continued to pray and to receive those who sought encouragement. He died at the friary in Cagliari on May 11, 1781. His reputation for holiness, already widespread among the Sardinian people, continued after his death.

Pope Pius XII beatified Ignatius on June 16, 1940. The same pope canonized him on October 21, 1951. His life remains a witness to the dignity of the lay brother's vocation within religious life. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on May 11, especially recalling his humble service and generosity toward the poor.

What Ignatius teaches

St. Ignatius shows that holiness can be formed through unnoticed work, honest dealings, and daily concern for the poor. No service is small when it is offered to Christ in love. The works of mercy are concrete expressions of charity, as taught in CCC 2447.
