St. John Baptist de la Salle

St. John Baptist de la Salle formed a community of teaching brothers and renewed Christian education for poor children.
The story
John Baptist de la Salle was born in Reims, France, on April 30, 1651, into a prosperous family. He studied at the University of Reims and at the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. After the deaths of his parents, he cared for his younger siblings while continuing his preparation for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on April 9, 1678, and received a doctorate in theology in 1680.
Through the educator Adrien Nyel, Father de la Salle became involved in opening schools for poor boys. He gradually gathered the teachers into a stable religious community. To share their uncertain life, he resigned his cathedral canonry and distributed his wealth to the poor. The community became the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Its members were consecrated lay brothers rather than priests, and their vocation centered on Christian education.
De la Salle promoted practical reforms that helped shape modern schooling. Lessons were commonly given in French rather than only in Latin. Pupils were taught together in organized classes, and teachers received careful spiritual and professional formation. His writings included The Conduct of the Christian Schools, Meditations for the Time of Retreat, and rules for his institute. He insisted that education should unite sound learning, discipline, prayer, and personal concern for every child, especially the poor.
The work faced lawsuits, opposition from established schoolmasters, financial hardship, and disagreements within the young institute. De la Salle also endured illness and periods of discouragement. He surrendered leadership to the brothers and died at Saint-Yon, near Rouen, on Good Friday, April 7, 1719. Pope Leo XIII canonized him in 1900. Pope Pius XII declared him patron of all Christian teachers in 1950. His memorial is observed in the General Roman Calendar on April 7.

Christian education serves the whole person by joining truth, virtue, faith, and practical care. St. John Baptist de la Salle teaches that teachers exercise a genuine vocation when they recognize Christ in those entrusted to them. The Church affirms that parents and educators share responsibility for moral and spiritual formation in CCC 2229.
