St. John Eudes
“A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you.”
John Eudes renewed parish life, formed priests, aided vulnerable women, and promoted liturgical devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
The story
John Eudes was born on November 14, 1601, in Ri, a village in Normandy. He studied with the Jesuits at Caen and entered the French Oratory in 1623. He was ordained a priest in 1625. Soon afterward, epidemics struck parts of Normandy. John cared personally for the sick while taking precautions not to infect his religious community. This ministry revealed the practical charity that would accompany his preaching throughout life.
John became a successful parish missionary. He traveled through towns and villages, preaching repentance, hearing confessions, teaching the faith, and encouraging lasting reform. He saw that brief missions would bear little fruit unless parishes had well-formed priests. In 1643 he left the Oratory and founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, later called the Eudists. Its members conducted missions and established seminaries for the spiritual and theological formation of clergy.
He also responded to the suffering of women who wished to leave prostitution or other dangerous circumstances. With the help of Madeleine Lamy and other collaborators, he founded a refuge at Caen in 1641. This work developed into the Order of Our Lady of Charity. The community joined prayer with patient care for women seeking safety and a new beginning.
John’s spirituality centered on the mystery of Christ living in his members. In 1637 he published The Life and Kingdom of Jesus in Christian Souls. He taught Christians to unite their prayer, choices, and sufferings with the dispositions of Jesus. He also promoted devotion to the Heart of Mary and the Heart of Jesus as expressions of their interior love. He composed liturgical texts and celebrated a feast of the Heart of Mary in 1648. In 1672 his communities celebrated a feast of the Heart of Jesus, decades before the devotion received wider liturgical recognition.
John died at Caen on August 19, 1680. Pope Pius X beatified him in 1909, and Pope Pius XI canonized him in 1925. His optional memorial on the General Roman Calendar recalls a priest who united evangelization, priestly formation, concrete mercy, and devotion to the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
What John teaches
St. John Eudes teaches that devotion to Christ’s Heart must lead to conversion, mercy, and faithful service. The Sacred Heart reveals the divine love with which Jesus loves the Father and every human person (CCC 478). Prayer becomes fruitful when it shapes concrete works of compassion.
