St. Joseph Calasanz

St. Joseph Calasanz founded the Piarists to provide poor children with free education rooted in Christian faith.
The story
Joseph Calasanz was born in 1557 at Peralta de la Sal in the Kingdom of Aragon, now part of Spain. He studied philosophy, law, and theology before being ordained a priest in 1583. He served in several Spanish dioceses and held responsible ecclesiastical offices. In 1592 he went to Rome, where an encounter with neglected children changed the direction of his life.
Rome contained many poor families whose children received little or no schooling. In 1597, Joseph helped establish a free school at the Church of Santa Dorotea in Trastevere. He taught reading, writing, arithmetic, Christian doctrine, and habits of prayer. The work expanded rapidly because he accepted children who could not pay. Joseph regarded education as a work of justice and evangelization, not as a privilege reserved for the wealthy.
Other priests joined him, and the community became known as the Clerics Regular of the Poor Schools of the Mother of God, commonly called the Piarists. Pope Gregory XV approved the order in 1621. Its members professed the usual religious vows and a particular dedication to educating youth. Joseph governed the growing institute while continuing to teach, hear confessions, and seek support for the schools.
The final years of his life were painful. Internal disputes, financial problems, and accusations against members brought Roman investigations. Joseph was removed from office, and in 1646 Pope Innocent X reduced the institute to a congregation without religious vows. Joseph accepted this humiliation without abandoning hope that the work would survive. He died in Rome on August 25, 1648. The Piarists were fully restored in 1669. Pope Benedict XIV beatified Joseph in 1748, and Pope Clement XIII canonized him in 1767. His optional memorial is observed in the General Roman Calendar on August 25.
What Joseph teaches
St. Joseph Calasanz shows that education can be an act of mercy, justice, and evangelization. He also teaches perseverance when good work is misunderstood or temporarily defeated. The duty to make education available to all is affirmed in CCC 2229.
