Sts. Louis and Zélie Martin
“Blessed are all who fear the Lord, and who walk in his ways.”
Louis and Zélie Martin pursued holiness through marriage, work, suffering, and the Christian upbringing of their children, including St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
The story
Louis Martin was born in Bordeaux on August 22, 1823, into a military family. He learned watchmaking and hoped to enter religious life, but his lack of Latin prevented his admission. Azélie-Marie Guérin, known as Zélie, was born near Gandelain on December 23, 1831. She also considered religious life, but instead became a skilled maker of Alençon lace and established a successful workshop. Louis and Zélie met in Alençon and married there on July 12, 1858, the date now kept as their memorial.
Their early idea of living as brother and sister gave way, with priestly guidance, to an openness to children. They had nine children, four of whom died young. Their five surviving daughters all later entered religious life. The youngest was Thérèse, the future St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. The Martins prayed together, attended Mass, observed Sunday rest, assisted the poor, and treated employees with concern. Their surviving letters show affection, practical judgment, business pressures, grief, and confidence in God rather than an idealized family life without struggle.
Zélie developed breast cancer. She continued caring for her household and traveled to Lourdes seeking healing, but she died in Alençon on August 28, 1877. Louis then moved the family to Lisieux, where Zélie's brother and sister-in-law could help raise the girls. He supported each daughter's vocation, even though their departures cost him dearly. In later years Louis suffered severe mental and physical illness. He spent several years at the Bon Sauveur hospital in Caen and accepted his humiliation with faith. He died at Arnières-sur-Iton on July 29, 1894.
Pope Benedict XVI authorized their beatification, which was celebrated at Lisieux on October 19, 2008. Pope Francis canonized them together in Rome on October 18, 2015, during the Synod on the Family. They were the first married couple canonized together as spouses. Their sanctity was found in ordinary duties faithfully embraced, in mutual love, and in trust amid bereavement and illness.
What Louis teaches
Sts. Louis and Zélie show that marriage and family life are true paths to holiness. Their home became a domestic church through prayer, sacrifice, work, and forgiveness, as described in CCC 1655. Ask for their help in receiving both family joys and family wounds with faith.

God of faithful love, you sanctified Louis and Zélie through the covenant of marriage and the care of their family. Through their intercession, strengthen spouses, comfort grieving parents, and make Christian homes schools of holiness. Amen.
