St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort

St. Louis de Montfort preached parish missions and taught total consecration to Jesus Christ through the loving maternal care of Mary.

The story

Louis-Marie Grignion was born on January 31, 1673, at Montfort-sur-Meu in Brittany, France. He studied with the Jesuits at Rennes and then prepared for the priesthood in Paris, including at the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice. He was ordained in 1700. From the beginning, his ministry was marked by love for the poor, strong preaching, and a desire to lead souls to Jesus Christ through a disciplined Christian life.

Louis served for a time at the hospital for the poor in Poitiers. There he met Marie-Louise Trichet, who became the first member of the Daughters of Wisdom, a community devoted to service and Christian education. His intense manner and ambitious reforms sometimes produced conflict with superiors and local authorities. In 1706 he traveled to Rome and sought guidance from Pope Clement XI. The pope directed him to continue missionary work in France and gave him the title of apostolic missionary.

For the next decade Louis preached parish missions across western France. He taught the faith, heard confessions, encouraged the Rosary, organized works of charity, and erected mission crosses. At Pontchâteau, thousands helped him construct a large outdoor Calvary. Government authorities ordered it demolished shortly before its planned blessing in 1710, a severe disappointment that Louis accepted without revolt. He also laid the foundations of the Company of Mary, later known as the Montfort Missionaries.

Louis wrote several spiritual works, including The Love of Eternal Wisdom, The Secret of Mary, and Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin. The manuscript of True Devotion remained hidden for more than a century and was published in the nineteenth century. Its teaching presents Marian consecration as a baptismal renewal ordered entirely toward union with Christ, never as worship of Mary. Louis died during a mission at Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre on April 28, 1716, aged forty-three. Pope Leo XIII beatified him in 1888, and Pope Pius XII canonized him in 1947. His optional memorial is observed on April 28.

What Louis teaches

St. Louis teaches that authentic devotion to Mary always leads more deeply to Jesus Christ and faithful living of baptism. Catholic veneration of Mary differs essentially from the adoration owed to God alone, as CCC 971 explains. His perseverance also shows how disappointment can be offered without bitterness.
