St. Maria Goretti

St. Maria Goretti resisted sexual assault, forgave her attacker before dying, and became a witness to dignity, mercy, and freedom from hatred.

The story

Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy. She was the third of seven children of Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. The family lived in poverty and moved in search of farm work, eventually settling at Ferriere near Nettuno. Luigi died of malaria in 1900. Assunta then worked in the fields while Maria cared for younger children, prepared meals, and maintained the household.

The Gorettis shared a building with Giovanni Serenelli and his son Alessandro. Alessandro later testified that he had made previous sexual advances toward Maria, which she rejected. On July 5, 1902, while Maria was sewing and watching a younger child, the twenty-year-old Alessandro tried to force her to submit to sexual assault. She resisted and told him that the act was sinful. He stabbed her repeatedly with a sharp tool and fled.

Maria was taken to a hospital in Nettuno. Physicians attempted surgery, but her injuries were fatal. According to testimony gathered for her cause, she received the sacraments, forgave Alessandro, and expressed hope that he would one day be with her in heaven. She died on July 6, 1902, at the age of eleven. Her forgiveness did not excuse the violence or remove Alessandro’s responsibility. It witnessed to a refusal to let hatred have the final word.

Alessandro was convicted and sentenced to thirty years in prison. For years he remained bitter. He later described a dream of Maria offering him flowers, after which his life began to change. Following his release, he sought forgiveness from Assunta Goretti, who accepted his repentance. He eventually lived and worked at a Capuchin monastery as a lay brother and died in 1970.

Pope Pius XII beatified Maria in 1947 and canonized her on June 24, 1950, before a vast crowd in Rome. Her mother was present. The Church honors Maria as a virgin and martyr because she died defending her bodily integrity and Christian chastity. Her optional memorial also proclaims that victims bear no guilt for violence committed against them and that Christian mercy seeks conversion without denying justice.

What Maria teaches

Maria teaches the dignity of every human person and the freedom that comes from refusing hatred. Chastity protects the integrity of the person, as CCC 2338 explains, and it never makes a victim responsible for another person’s crime. Ask Christ for courage, healing, justice, and the grace to forgive.
