Born 1504, Bosco Marengo, ItalyDied 1572, Rome, Italy
Feed my sheep.
John 21:17

A Dominican reformer elected pope, Pius V implemented the Council of Trent and supported the Christian coalition victorious at Lepanto.

The story

Antonio Ghislieri was born on January 17, 1504, at Bosco Marengo in northern Italy. His family had limited means, and he worked as a shepherd before entering the Dominican Order at fourteen. Taking the religious name Michele, he studied philosophy and theology and was ordained a priest in 1528. He taught, governed Dominican communities, and became known for an austere life and firm defense of Catholic doctrine during the Reformation.

Pope Paul IV appointed him bishop of Sutri and Nepi in 1556 and a cardinal in 1557. He also held senior responsibilities in the Roman Inquisition. Elected pope on January 7, 1566, he took the name Pius V. He continued to wear his white Dominican habit, a practice that helped establish white as the customary papal color. His government was strict, reflecting both his reforming zeal and the severe political and judicial standards of sixteenth-century Europe.

Pius worked to implement the Council of Trent. Under his authority, the Roman Catechism was published in 1566, a revised Roman Breviary in 1568, and the Roman Missal in 1570. The missal standardized the Latin liturgy throughout much of the Western Church while preserving rites with longstanding use. These measures were matters of liturgical discipline rather than unchangeable dogma, but they profoundly shaped Catholic worship for centuries. He also required bishops and clergy to observe discipline more faithfully and opposed abuses within Church administration.

Facing Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean, Pius helped organize the Holy League. Its fleet defeated the Ottoman navy at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. He attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and encouraged devotion to the Rosary. Pius died in Rome on May 1, 1572. Pope Clement X beatified him in 1672, and Pope Clement XI canonized him in 1712. His optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is observed on April 30.

What Pius teaches

St. Pius V teaches that genuine reform begins with personal conversion, disciplined prayer, and fidelity to the Church's received faith. Authority in the Church exists to guard truth and nourish Christ's flock, not to seek personal advantage. The pastoral office reflects Christ's command, “Feed my sheep” in John 21:17.
