St. Rose of Lima

Rose of Lima joined prayer, penance, and service to the poor, becoming the first canonized saint born in the Americas.

The story

Isabel Flores de Oliva was born in Lima on April 20, 1586, to Gaspar Flores and María de Oliva. She received the name Isabel at baptism, but the name Rose became attached to her in childhood. Archbishop St. Turibius of Mogrovejo confirmed her in 1597. Lima was then a major city of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, marked by wealth, poverty, missionary activity, and the exploitation of Indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans.

Rose admired St. Catherine of Siena and resolved to give herself to Christ in virginity. Her family expected her to marry, but she resisted that plan and eventually became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. She remained in her family's home rather than entering a monastery. She supported the household through needlework, embroidery, and the cultivation of flowers. In a small room or shelter in the garden, she spent long periods in prayer.

Rose practiced severe fasting and bodily penances. These practices belong to her historical setting and should not be copied without prudent spiritual guidance. Catholic teaching does not permit harm to the body, which is God's gift. Her deeper purpose was union with the suffering Christ and reparation for sin. She also endured spiritual darkness and misunderstanding. Her holiness was not confined to private penance. She welcomed poor and sick people into her family's home, cared for them personally, and sought help for those whom colonial society neglected.

Rose became known in Lima for prayer and charity, although she wanted no public distinction. During her final illness, she stayed in the home of Gonzalo de la Maza, a royal official, and his wife, María de Uzátegui. She died on August 24, 1617, at the age of thirty one. Crowds attended her funeral, and she was buried at the Dominican church in Lima. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1668. Pope Clement X canonized her on April 12, 1671, making her the first canonized saint born in the Americas. Her optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is observed on August 23.

What Rose teaches

St. Rose teaches that contemplative prayer must bear fruit in concrete love for suffering neighbors. Penance is valuable when it is guided by charity, prudence, and the duties of one's state in life. Christ identifies himself especially with those in need, as Matthew 25:40 teaches.
