Bl. Solanus Casey

A humble Capuchin porter welcomed the troubled, prayed with the sick, and led thousands to trust God's providence.

The story

Bernard Francis Casey was born on November 25, 1870, near Prescott, Wisconsin, into a large family of Irish immigrants. As a young man he worked at several jobs, including lumber work and streetcar service. He entered a diocesan seminary but struggled because much of the instruction was conducted in German and Latin. After leaving, he discerned a vocation with the Capuchins and received the religious name Solanus.

His academic difficulties continued during formation. The Capuchins nevertheless recognized his holiness and perseverance. Solanus was ordained a priest on July 24, 1904, but as a simplex priest. Under the discipline then in force, he lacked faculties to hear confessions or preach formal doctrinal sermons. This restriction was painful, yet he accepted it without resentment and devoted himself to the ministries permitted to him.

Father Solanus served for many years as porter in Capuchin friaries in Yonkers, New York City, and Detroit. He greeted visitors, listened patiently to their troubles, prayed with them, and encouraged confidence in God's providence. He promoted the Seraphic Mass Association, through which people requested prayers and supported Capuchin missions. Many visitors reported healings or other favors after his prayers. The Church does not require Catholics to accept every such report, but the testimonies helped establish his lasting reputation for compassionate intercession. He also loved music and often played the violin.

In his final illness, Solanus was hospitalized in Detroit. He died on July 31, 1957, at the age of eighty-six. Thousands came to honor him, remembering a priest whose apparent limitations had become the setting for a fruitful ministry of welcome. St. John Paul II declared him venerable in 1995. After the Church approved a medically inexplicable healing attributed to his intercession, Pope Francis authorized his beatification. Cardinal Angelo Amato beatified him at Ford Field in Detroit on November 18, 2017. His feast is celebrated by the Capuchins and in several local calendars near the anniversary of his death.

What Bl. teaches

Bl. Solanus Casey shows that holiness does not depend on prestige, academic success, or an impressive office. God can make humble work fruitful when it is offered with patience and love. Christian gratitude seeks God's will in every circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; CCC 2638).
