Bl. Stanley Rother

An Oklahoma priest remained with his threatened Guatemalan parishioners and was murdered in hatred of the faith during the civil war.

The story

Stanley Francis Rother was born on March 27, 1935, in Okarche, Oklahoma, into a Catholic farming family. He entered seminary but struggled with Latin and was dismissed from his first program. With the support of Bishop Victor Reed, he continued his formation at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Maryland. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa on May 25, 1963.

After several assignments in Oklahoma, Father Rother volunteered in 1968 for the diocesan mission at Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. The parish served the Tz'utujil Maya people. He learned Spanish and Tz'utujil, assisted with a Tz'utujil translation of the New Testament, celebrated the sacraments, trained catechists, and helped establish practical projects. His farming background made it easy for him to work beside parishioners in their fields.

Guatemala's civil war grew increasingly violent. Government forces and allied groups abducted or killed catechists, community leaders, and others suspected of opposing the regime. Father Rother recorded the names of missing parishioners and continued serving families endangered by the repression. When he learned that his own name appeared on a death list, he returned briefly to Oklahoma. He soon chose to go back, explaining in a letter that a shepherd could not run when his people were in danger.

During the night of July 28, 1981, armed men entered the parish rectory at Santiago Atitlán. Father Rother resisted being taken away because he feared that parish workers would also be endangered. The attackers shot and killed him. His body was returned to Oklahoma for burial, while his heart was enshrined in Santiago Atitlán at the request of his parishioners. Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom in 2016. Cardinal Angelo Amato beatified him in Oklahoma City on September 23, 2017, making him the first United States born priest formally declared a martyr by the Catholic Church.

What Bl. teaches

Bl. Stanley Rother teaches that pastoral charity remains faithful when service becomes dangerous. His courage grew from ordinary duties faithfully repeated, not from a desire for death. Christ identifies the good shepherd by his willingness to lay down his life for the sheep (John 10:11).
