What is the particular judgment, and how is it different from the Last Judgment?

The particular judgment occurs immediately after each person's death. The Last Judgment occurs when Christ returns, raises the dead, and publicly reveals the truth of every life and of all history.

The particular judgment. Death ends the time in which a person can accept or reject God's grace. Each soul then receives its eternal recompense in a particular judgment by Christ (CCC 1021-1022). Those who die in God's grace and are perfectly purified enter heaven. Those who die in His friendship but still need purification undergo purgatory before heaven. Those who die in unrepented mortal sin descend immediately into hell (CCC 1030-1035). Scripture says, "It is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment" (Heb 9:27).

The Last Judgment. At Christ's return, all the dead will rise. Their souls will be reunited with their bodies, and Christ will judge the living and the dead (CCC 1038). Jesus describes the Son of Man separating people as a shepherd separates sheep from goats, judging their response to Him as shown in love or neglect of others (Mt 25:31-46). Those who have done good will rise to life, and those who have done evil will rise to condemnation (Jn 5:28-29).

Why there are two judgments. The Last Judgment does not reverse the particular judgment or offer another chance to repent. It confirms and publicly manifests God's judgment. At that time, the consequences of every person's actions, including effects that continued long after death, will be revealed. God's justice, mercy, and providence throughout history will become clear (CCC 1039-1041). Every hidden act of charity, every concealed injustice, and every grace accepted or refused will be seen in truth.

What follows the Last Judgment. Christ will bring creation to its promised fulfillment. The righteous, glorified in body and soul, will live with God in the new heavens and the new earth. Those who definitively rejected God will remain separated from Him (CCC 1042-1044). The Church does not claim to know the date of Christ's return. Jesus commands vigilance rather than speculation (Mt 24:36, 42).

How to prepare. Live today in friendship with Christ. Repent of mortal sin, go to confession, receive the Eucharist worthily, forgive those who hurt you, and serve people in need. Judgment is sobering because choices matter. It is also hopeful because the Judge is Jesus, who died and rose to save us and now offers abundant mercy.
