What is the Miraculous Medal?

The Miraculous Medal is a devotional medal associated with apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Catherine Labouré in Paris in 1830. Catholics wear it as a sign of trust in God and confidence in Mary’s intercession.

Where it came from. St. Catherine Labouré was a novice with the Daughters of Charity when she reported seeing Mary standing upon a globe, crushing a serpent beneath her feet. Rays streamed from rings on Mary’s hands. Around the image appeared the prayer: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” Catherine said Mary asked that a medal be struck according to this design. The archbishop of Paris authorized its production in 1832, and devotion spread rapidly.

What the images mean. The front depicts Mary as the woman associated with victory over the serpent and evil, recalling God’s promise in Genesis (Gen 3:15). The prayer refers to Mary’s Immaculate Conception, her preservation from original sin by God’s grace from the first moment of her existence (CCC 490-493). The rays symbolize graces God gives through her intercession. On the reverse, the letter M is joined to a cross. Beneath it are the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Twelve stars surround the design, recalling the biblical woman crowned with twelve stars (Rev 12:1).

Why it is called miraculous. The popular name arose because many people reported conversions, healings, and other favors after receiving or wearing the medal with faith. The medal itself has no magical power. Every grace comes from God through Jesus Christ. Mary prays for us as a mother within the communion of saints, always leading us to her Son (CCC 956, 2677).

How Catholics should use it. The medal is a sacramental, a sacred sign established by the Church to prepare people to receive grace and cooperate with it (CCC 1667-1670). Wearing one should be joined to prayer, repentance, the sacraments, and Christian living. Treating it as a charm would be superstition (CCC 2111).

Have the medal blessed by a priest or deacon, wear it reverently, and pray its simple prayer when you need help trusting Christ: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
