St. Bernardine of Siena

Priest and Franciscan Preacher
Born 1380, Massa Marittima, Republic of SienaDied 1444, L'Aquila, Kingdom of Naples
There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved.
Acts 4:12

A Franciscan reformer and tireless preacher, Bernardine led divided cities toward repentance through devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

The story

Bernardine was born at Massa Marittima in 1380 to a noble Sienese family. Orphaned while still young, he was raised by relatives and educated in Siena. During the plague of 1400, he joined the Confraternity of Our Lady at the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. He organized other young men to nurse the sick, although this service placed his own life in danger. After the epidemic, he continued caring for an elderly relative before discerning religious life.

In 1402 Bernardine entered the Franciscan Order, joining the Observant reform, which sought a stricter practice of poverty and community life. He was ordained a priest around 1404. After years of prayer and preparation, he began preaching throughout central and northern Italy. His clear voice, vivid examples, and direct calls to conversion drew immense crowds. He condemned gambling, usury, factional violence, and vindictive feuds. He urged Christians to replace party symbols and superstitious objects with the monogram IHS, representing the name of Jesus.

Some critics accused Bernardine of promoting a superstitious devotion. In 1427 he was summoned to Rome and examined under Pope Martin V. His teaching was judged orthodox, and he was permitted to continue preaching. The devotion centered not on the painted letters themselves but on Jesus Christ, the one Savior whom the letters signified. Bernardine also wrote works on Christian moral life and economics, including careful discussions of contracts, property, and the obligations of merchants.

Bernardine served as vicar general of the Franciscan Observants from 1438 to 1442. Under his leadership, the reform grew greatly, and houses of study were strengthened. Even as his health failed, he resumed missionary preaching. He died at L'Aquila on May 20, 1444. Reports of favors at his tomb encouraged a rapid cause for canonization. Pope Nicholas V canonized him in 1450, only six years after his death. His optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar recalls a priest who joined persuasive speech to personal austerity and practical works of mercy.

What Bernardine teaches

St. Bernardine teaches that the name of Jesus should lead to trust, repentance, and peace rather than empty display. The Church honors the Holy Name because it expresses the identity and saving mission of Christ, as explained in CCC 430 to 435. Ask Jesus to make your speech truthful and your influence a service to others.
