St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions

These twenty-five Mexican martyrs remained faithful to Christ while public worship and priestly ministry were violently suppressed.

The story

Christopher Magallanes Jara was born in 1869 at San Rafael, near Totatiche in the Mexican state of Jalisco. He worked as a shepherd before entering the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1899. As pastor of Totatiche, he promoted catechesis, schools, local economic initiatives, and devotion to the Eucharist. When government pressure closed the seminary at Guadalajara, he helped establish a clandestine seminary so that priestly formation could continue.

The Mexican Constitution of 1917 imposed severe restrictions on the Catholic Church. Their enforcement became especially violent under President Plutarco Elías Calles. Churches were closed, religious communities were dispersed, and priests risked arrest for celebrating Mass or administering the sacraments. Armed resistance known as the Cristero uprising began in 1926. The martyrs commemorated together did not all die at the same time or place, and they were not canonized because of political allegiance. They were recognized because they accepted death rather than abandon Christ and their priestly or baptismal duties.

Father Magallanes consistently opposed taking up arms. Nevertheless, soldiers arrested him on May 21, 1927, while he was traveling to celebrate Mass at a rural location. He was imprisoned with Father Agustín Caloca Cortés, a young priest involved in the clandestine seminary. Without a proper trial, both were shot at Colotlán, Jalisco, on May 25, 1927. The wider group includes twenty-two diocesan priests and three laymen killed between 1915 and 1937. Among them were priests who secretly celebrated Mass and laymen who protected their pastors or remained steadfast under interrogation.

Pope John Paul II beatified Christopher Magallanes and his companions in 1992 and canonized them in Rome on May 21, 2000. He emphasized that their martyrdom arose from hatred of the Catholic faith. Their optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is kept on May 21. Their different ministries and circumstances form one witness to the enduring life of the Church, which continued through hidden altars, quiet confessions, courageous families, and priests willing to remain beside their people.

What Christopher teaches

These martyrs show that fidelity to Christ is deeper than political identity and does not depend upon public approval. Martyrdom is the supreme witness to the truth of the faith, as CCC 2473 teaches. Pray for Christians who must worship in secret and for the courage to confess Christ peacefully.
