The meaning of the name Michael

The three archangels named in Scripture: the warrior, the messenger, and the healer.

The story

Michael ("Who is like God?") casts down the dragon (Rev 12:7-9) and defends the people of God. Gabriel ("Strength of God") announces John the Baptist and the Incarnation (Lk 1). Raphael ("God heals") guides Tobias and heals Tobit (Tobit 5-12). The Church honors them together on Michaelmas, the ancient feast of the dedication of a basilica to St. Michael near Rome (CCC 328-336).

Patronage

police and soldiers (Michael), messengers and communications (Gabriel), travelers, healing, and the blind (Raphael).
