Our Lady of Lourdes
“The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”
Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, calling for prayer, penance, and renewed faith in God's mercy.
The story
On February 11, 1858, fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous went with her sister and a friend to gather firewood near the grotto of Massabielle outside Lourdes, France. Bernadette came from a poor family and had received little schooling. Near the grotto, she saw a young woman dressed in white, with a blue sash and a rosary. Her companions saw nothing. Bernadette prayed the Rosary while the lady silently moved the beads through her fingers.
Bernadette reported eighteen apparitions between February 11 and July 16, 1858. Civil officials and some clergy questioned her closely. She remained consistent despite ridicule and pressure. The lady called for penance, prayer for sinners, and processions to the grotto. During the apparition of February 25, Bernadette was directed to drink from a place where no visible spring existed. After she scraped the ground, muddy water appeared. It gradually became the flowing spring still associated with Lourdes.
On March 2, the lady asked that a chapel be built and that people come in procession. The parish priest, Father Dominique Peyramale, demanded that Bernadette ask the lady's name. On March 25, the feast of the Annunciation, the lady answered in the local dialect, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Bernadette did not understand this theological expression. Pope Pius IX had solemnly defined the dogma of Mary's Immaculate Conception four years earlier, in 1854. The title therefore drew particular attention from Church authorities.
After a careful diocesan inquiry, Bishop Bertrand-Sévère Laurence of Tarbes declared the apparitions worthy of belief in 1862. Acceptance of a private revelation is not the same as faith in the public revelation entrusted to the Church, which was completed in Christ. A sanctuary and several churches were built at Lourdes, and pilgrims came from around the world. Some reported physical cures. The Church established rigorous medical and canonical examinations before recognizing any cure as medically unexplained and associated with prayer. The optional memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes especially directs attention to the sick and to Mary's constant mission of leading people to her Son.
What Our teaches
Lourdes joins prayer for healing with a deeper call to conversion and penance. The Church honors authentic private revelations only when they help the faithful live the Gospel more fully, as explained in CCC 67. Mary always directs the Church toward Christ and his saving mercy.
