Novena to the Immaculate Conception

To The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This novena honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of her Immaculate Conception. The feast celebrates God’s singular grace in preserving Mary from original sin from the first moment of her conception, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ. This traditional nine-day devotion is prayed before the feast on December 8, beginning on November 29. You may also pray it at any time when seeking Mary’s intercession. The faithful commonly ask for purity of heart, strength against sin, deeper trust in grace, and help with a particular need. Devotion to Mary always leads you to her Son, from whom every grace comes.

Begin on November 29 so that the novena ends on December 7, the eve of the feast.
Day 1

Chosen by Grace

The Immaculate Conception begins with God’s initiative. Before Mary could act or speak, God prepared her by a singular gift of grace. Her holiness was not earned by human effort. It was the fruit of Christ’s saving work applied to her from the first moment of her conception. Let this mystery deepen your gratitude. Every movement toward holiness begins with grace. Ask for the humility to receive what God gives and to depend upon him rather than upon your own strength.

O most Holy Virgin, who wast pleasing to the Lord and didst become His Mother, immaculate in body and spirit, in faith and in love, look kindly on me as I implore thy powerful intercession. O most Holy Mother, who by thy blessed Immaculate Conception, from the first moment of thy conception didst crush the head of the enemy, receive our prayers as we implore thee to present at the throne of God the favor we now request. (Here mention your request.) O Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Mother of Christ, thou hadst influence with thy Divine Son while upon this earth; thou hast the same influence now in heaven. Pray for us and obtain for us from Him the granting of my petition if it be the Divine Will. Amen.
Day 2

Preserved from Sin

Mary was preserved from original sin through the merits of Jesus Christ. She did not stand apart from the Savior. She was redeemed by him in a unique and perfect manner. Her privilege reveals the power of his Cross, which reaches beyond the limits of time. When you struggle with sin or its effects, look to Christ with confidence. No wound lies beyond his mercy. Ask Mary to help you seek forgiveness promptly and trust the grace her Son offers through the sacraments.

Day 3

Victory of Christ

The holiness of Mary proclaims the victory of her Son. Sin and death do not have the final word. From the beginning of her life, Mary belonged wholly to God and stood as a sign of what Christ came to accomplish for his people. You may still experience temptation, weakness, and discouragement, but you do not face them alone. Christ has conquered. Ask Mary to help you resist the enemy, remain close to Jesus, and persevere when faithfulness requires patience and courage.

Day 4

Freedom for God

Freedom reaches its fullness when it chooses what is good. Mary’s freedom was never diminished by grace. Grace made her free to love God with an undivided heart. Her life shows that obedience to God is not slavery but the path to true liberty. Consider where fear, habit, or attachment keeps you from responding generously to the Lord. Ask for grace to surrender those obstacles. Through Mary’s intercession, seek the freedom to choose what leads you closer to Christ.

Day 5

A Faithful Yes

Mary’s Immaculate Conception prepared her for a life of faithful cooperation with God. At the Annunciation, she freely consented to become the Mother of the Savior. Her yes continued through hidden years, uncertainty, suffering, and the Cross. Your own response to God is also renewed through many ordinary choices. Holiness grows when you answer grace in the duties placed before you. Ask Mary for a steady heart that remains faithful after the first moment of enthusiasm has passed.

Day 6

Purity of Heart

Mary was immaculate in body and soul because she belonged entirely to God. Purity of heart means loving him without allowing lesser goods to take his place. It requires honesty about your thoughts, desires, and actions. It also requires confidence in divine mercy when you fall. Ask Mary to guard your senses, purify your intentions, and teach you reverence for every human person. Bring any hidden weakness to Christ, especially through sincere prayer and the sacrament of reconciliation.

Day 7

Mother of the Redeemer

God prepared Mary to be the Mother of his Son. Her privilege was therefore a gift for the whole Church, since through her Christ took the human nature in which he saved us. Mary never keeps attention fixed upon herself. She carries Jesus and directs his disciples to him. Place your needs in her maternal care today. Ask her to bring them before Christ and to help you accept his answer, whether it brings immediate relief or calls for patient trust.

Day 8

Trusting Her Intercession

Mary’s intercession depends entirely upon Christ, the one mediator and source of every grace. Her closeness to him gives you reason to seek her prayers with confidence. She knows the needs of Christ’s members and cares for them as a mother. When you present your petition, do so without trying to control the answer. Ask for what seems good, but leave room for God’s wiser providence. Mary will help you trust that the Lord hears every sincere prayer and acts for your salvation.

Day 9

Hope of Holiness

Mary’s perfect holiness is a sign of hope for the Church. In her, you see what grace can accomplish in a human life wholly given to God. The Lord also calls you to become holy, not by your strength alone, but through union with Christ. As this novena ends, renew your desire to live in grace and to begin again whenever you fail. Ask Mary to keep you faithful, to lead you toward her Son, and to help you seek eternal life above every passing good.

Closing prayer

O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin didst prepare a worthy dwelling place for Thy Son, we beseech Thee that, as by the foreseen death of Thy same Son Thou didst preserve her from all stain, so Thou wouldst grant us also, through her intercession, to come to Thee with pure hearts. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
