Novena to St. Joseph

To St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This novena honors Saint Joseph, the chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and guardian of the Child Jesus. Its daily prayer was published by Pope Leo XIII in 1889 with his encyclical on devotion to Saint Joseph. Catholics traditionally pray the novena from March 10 through March 18 in preparation for his feast. Saint Joseph is invoked as protector of the Church, patron of families and workers, and helper of the dying. You may also seek his intercession for purity, employment, family needs, faithful obedience, and a peaceful death.

Feast day
March 19
When to begin
Begin on March 10 so that the ninth day is prayed on March 18, the eve of the feast.

Opening prayer, every day

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Day 1

Guardian of Jesus

God entrusted his incarnate Son to Joseph’s faithful care. Joseph received this responsibility with humility and protected Jesus without seeking recognition for himself. His fatherly service shows that holiness often grows through ordinary duties performed with love. Bring your responsibilities to Saint Joseph today, especially those that feel heavy or hidden. Ask him to help you care faithfully for the people and tasks God has placed before you, trusting that quiet acts of love have great value in God’s sight.

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our tribulation, and, having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity wherewith thou wast united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His Blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength. Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen offspring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness. And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so now defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.
Day 2

Faithful Spouse

Joseph loved Mary with a pure, faithful, and self-giving love. He protected her dignity and trusted God when circumstances were difficult to understand. His marriage to Mary reminds you that true love seeks the good of the other person and remains obedient to God. Ask Saint Joseph to guard marriages, strengthen families, and heal relationships wounded by selfishness or fear. Entrust to him anyone preparing for marriage, and ask for the grace to treat every person with patience, reverence, and charity.

Amen.
Day 3

Obedient Servant

Joseph responded promptly whenever God made his will known. He took Mary into his home, gave the Child the name Jesus, fled into Egypt, and later returned as he was directed. His obedience was active, courageous, and rooted in trust. You may not receive every answer you desire, but God still calls you to faithfulness in what is clear. Ask Saint Joseph to help you obey God’s commandments, follow the teaching of the Church, and act without delay when charity requires your service.

Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.
Day 4

Dignity of Work

Joseph supported the Holy Family through honest labor. At his workbench, daily effort became an offering of love to God and service to those entrusted to him. His example teaches that work has dignity when it is done honestly and ordered toward the good. Entrust your employment, studies, household duties, and financial needs to Saint Joseph. Pray also for those who are unemployed, underpaid, or treated unjustly. Ask for perseverance in your tasks and freedom from anxiety, resentment, laziness, and the desire for praise.

Day 5

Model of Purity

Joseph’s chastity was a wholehearted gift of himself to God, Mary, and Jesus. Purity allowed him to love without possessing and to serve without seeking his own advantage. Christian chastity orders your desires according to your state of life and helps you see others as persons made in God’s image. Ask Saint Joseph to guard your heart, thoughts, words, and actions. Seek his help in resisting temptation, avoiding occasions of sin, and returning quickly to the sacrament of Penance whenever you fall.

Day 6

Protector of the Church

Joseph protected Christ in his earthly life, and the Church confidently seeks his protection as she carries Christ to the nations. His patronage does not replace Christ’s saving power but serves it through intercession. Pray today for the Pope, bishops, priests, deacons, religious, and lay faithful. Ask Saint Joseph to defend the Church from persecution, scandal, confusion, and division. Pray that every Catholic may remain faithful to the truth, receive the sacraments worthily, and bear patient witness to Christ in word and conduct.

Day 7

Faithful in Hiddenness

Much of Joseph’s life was hidden from public notice, yet every quiet year in Nazareth served God’s plan. He did not need attention to know that his life had meaning. This is a consoling lesson when your sacrifices seem unnoticed or your days appear ordinary. God sees each faithful act and receives every duty offered with love. Ask Saint Joseph to free you from vanity and discouragement. Pray for the grace to remain steady in prayer, family life, work, and service when no human praise follows.

Day 8

Courage in Trial

Joseph faced poverty, displacement, danger, and uncertainty while caring for Mary and Jesus. He did not allow fear to prevent faithful action. His courage came from confidence in God’s providence, not from control over events. Place your present troubles under his patronage, including illness, family conflict, financial strain, or uncertainty about the future. Ask him to obtain for you a calm heart and practical wisdom. Pray that suffering may draw you closer to Christ and make you more attentive to others who need help.

Day 9

Patron of Happy Death

Catholics honor Joseph as the patron of a happy death because tradition holds that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary. A happy death means dying reconciled to God and trusting in Christ’s mercy. Ask Saint Joseph to help you live each day in readiness for eternal life. Pray for the grace of final perseverance, for those approaching death, and for anyone who will die alone. Entrust your final hour to Jesus, and ask Joseph to keep you faithful until your earthly life is complete.

Closing prayer

O God, Who in Thine ineffable providence didst vouchsafe to choose blessed Joseph to be the spouse of Thy most holy Mother, grant, we beseech Thee, that we may have him for an intercessor in heaven, whom we venerate as our protector on earth. Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
