Novena to St. Jude

To St. Jude Thaddeus, Apostle

St. Jude Thaddeus was one of the Twelve Apostles and a faithful witness to Jesus Christ. Catholics have long invoked him as the patron of hopeless cases and causes that seem beyond human help. This traditional novena expresses confidence in his powerful intercession while placing every request before God. It is commonly prayed from October 19 through October 27 in preparation for his feast on October 28. You may also pray it whenever you face serious illness, family trouble, financial hardship, spiritual discouragement, or another grave need. Devotion to St. Jude should always lead you toward deeper trust in Christ and faithful perseverance in prayer.

Day 1

Called by Christ

St. Jude received his mission directly from Christ and remained faithful to that calling. His holiness did not rest on human influence or success, but on friendship with Jesus. When your situation seems hopeless, begin by remembering that Christ has also called you to belong to Him. Your present trial does not erase that grace. Ask St. Jude to help you remain close to Jesus, receive the sacraments faithfully, and place your need before God with the confidence of a beloved child.

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases and of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen. St. Jude, pray for us and for all who honor and invoke your aid.
Day 2

Hope in God

Christian hope is confidence in God and His promises, even when you cannot see how a difficulty will be resolved. St. Jude is called the patron of hopeless cases because his intercession directs discouraged hearts back to divine providence. Hope does not guarantee that every request will be answered exactly as you expect. It assures you that God remains faithful and can bring grace from every trial. Ask for the help you need while trusting that the Father sees your whole life and desires your eternal good.

Day 3

Perseverance in Prayer

Some prayers are answered quickly, while others require long and patient perseverance. Delay does not mean that God has forgotten you. Persistent prayer keeps your heart open to grace and teaches you to depend on the Lord rather than on your own strength. St. Jude followed Christ through sacrifice and uncertainty, and he can help you remain steadfast. Continue to ask with humility, but also listen for the ways God may be inviting you to forgive, act wisely, seek help, or surrender what you cannot control.

Day 4

Courage in Trials

Serious trials can leave you anxious, weary, and unsure of the next step. Christian courage begins with the knowledge that you do not suffer alone. Christ is near, and the saints intercede for the members of His Body on earth. St. Jude knew the cost of apostolic faithfulness and remained a servant of the Gospel. Ask him to obtain courage for you today. Grace may come as strength to endure, wisdom to make a difficult decision, or humility to accept assistance from someone God has placed near you.

Day 5

Trusting Divine Providence

God’s providence does not mean that every event is easy or immediately understandable. It means that creation remains in His loving care and that no suffering lies beyond His power to redeem. Your request matters to Him, including the details that others may overlook. Bring those details honestly into prayer. Through the intercession of St. Jude, ask for a deeper trust that does not depend on favorable circumstances. Let that trust free you from panic and help you take the good, responsible steps that are possible today.

Day 6

Faithful Christian Witness

St. Jude served Christ not only through private devotion but also through public witness to the Gospel. Your trial can become a place of witness when you respond with faith, honesty, patience, and charity. This does not require hiding sorrow or pretending that pain is small. It means allowing Christ to shape how you carry it. Ask St. Jude to help you avoid bitterness and despair. May your words and choices show that suffering does not have the final claim on a person who belongs to the risen Lord.

Day 7

Peace Amid Uncertainty

Uncertainty often burdens the heart before any outward event has occurred. Prayer brings that fear into the presence of God, where it can be met by grace. The peace Christ gives is deeper than a temporary feeling of relief. It comes from knowing that your life is held by the Father and that nothing can separate the faithful from His love. Ask St. Jude to intercede for a quiet and steadfast heart. Place tomorrow in God’s hands, and seek the grace needed to fulfill today’s duties with patience.

Day 8

Gratitude for Grace

Gratitude strengthens faith because it teaches you to recognize God’s action, including graces that arrive in unexpected forms. Before this novena ends, recall the blessings already present in your life. Give thanks for Christ, the Church, the sacraments, and the people who have shown you love. Thank God also for the strength to continue praying. Through St. Jude’s intercession, ask for the grace to remember divine favors without becoming attached only to the answer you prefer. A grateful heart remains open to God’s wisdom and generosity.

Day 9

Surrender to God

At the close of the novena, entrust your request fully to God. Surrender is not resignation or indifference. It is an act of faith that places your need under the Father’s wisdom and love. Continue to pray and act responsibly, but release the demand to control the outcome. St. Jude points you toward Jesus, whose saving will is always good. Ask for the grace to accept God’s answer, to recognize His help, and to remain faithful whether relief comes quickly, gradually, or in a form you did not foresee.

Closing prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
