Novena to St. Padre Pio

To St. Pio of Pietrelcina

This novena seeks the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, the Capuchin priest known for his deep prayer, love of the Eucharist, and devoted ministry in the confessional. His feast is celebrated on September 23. The novena includes the Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which Padre Pio prayed each day for those who entrusted their intentions to him. You may ask his intercession for healing, conversion, peace, perseverance, or any serious need. His familiar counsel, “Pray, hope, and don't worry,” directs you to trust in God's mercy while remaining faithful in prayer.

Opening prayer, every day

St. Pio of Pietrelcina, pray for me. Teach me to follow your counsel: “Pray, hope, and don't worry.” Present my petition to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Amen.
Day 1

A Life of Prayer

Padre Pio learned that prayer is not reserved for moments of comfort. He prayed through illness, misunderstanding, demanding work, and long hours of service. He teaches you to remain before God even when your attention wanders or consolation is absent. Prayer places your need within the loving will of the Father. Begin this novena with confidence, but also with humility. Ask clearly for the grace you desire, then allow God to answer according to His wisdom and your true good.

I. O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek, and I ask for the grace of [mention your request]. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You. II. O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in Your name, I ask the Father for the grace of [mention your request]. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You. III. O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but My words will not pass away.” Encouraged by Your infallible words, I now ask for the grace of [mention your request]. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.
Day 2

Hope Without Worry

Padre Pio's counsel to pray, hope, and not worry does not deny sorrow or uncertainty. It calls you to place them in God's hands. Worry turns the heart repeatedly toward what it cannot control, while Christian hope turns the heart toward the Lord who remains faithful. Bring God the thoughts that trouble you most. Ask Padre Pio to help you resist discouragement and needless fear. You may not see the answer yet, but you can trust that divine providence is already at work.

Day 3

Love of the Eucharist

The Holy Mass stood at the center of Padre Pio's priestly life. He approached the altar with reverence because the Eucharist makes present the sacrifice of Christ and gives us Christ Himself. Let his example renew your gratitude for this sacrament. If you can, unite this novena with attendance at Mass or a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. Bring your petition close to Jesus in the Eucharist. Ask for more than a solution to one difficulty. Ask for a heart joined more closely to His.

Day 4

Mercy and Confession

Padre Pio spent countless hours hearing confessions because he understood the seriousness of sin and the greater power of God's mercy. He urged people to be honest, repentant, and ready to change. As you pray today, examine your conscience without despair. The Lord does not reveal sin to crush you, but to forgive and heal you. If you have been away from confession, ask for the grace to return. Entrust your failures to Christ and receive the mercy He gives through His Church.

Day 5

Suffering with Christ

Padre Pio knew severe physical and spiritual suffering. He did not call suffering good in itself, but he united it with the sacrifice of Jesus. Your pain can also become an offering when it is given to Christ in faith and love. This does not prevent you from seeking healing or proper help. It means that no suffering must be wasted or endured alone. Ask Padre Pio to intercede for your healing and to help you remain close to Jesus while you wait.

Day 6

Under Mary's Care

Padre Pio had a tender devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and encouraged the faithful to pray the Rosary. Mary always leads you to her Son. Her intercession does not replace the saving work of Christ, but depends entirely upon it. Place your intention beneath her maternal care today. Ask her to help you accept God's word with faith and to remain near Jesus in every trial. Through the Rosary, you can contemplate Christ with Mary and entrust each concern to her prayers.

Day 7

Humility and Obedience

Padre Pio endured restrictions and misunderstandings while seeking to remain obedient to the Church. His example reminds you that holiness requires humility, especially when obedience is difficult. Humility does not mean ignoring truth or accepting wrongdoing. It means refusing pride, self-importance, and resentment while seeking God's will faithfully. Ask for freedom from the need to defend yourself at every moment. Let your prayer become simpler today. Place your reputation, plans, and desired outcome before God, and ask Him to lead you in truth.

Day 8

Charity Toward Others

Padre Pio's prayer led him to practical works of mercy, especially care for the sick and suffering. Genuine devotion opens the heart to another person's needs. As you ask for your own intention, remember those who carry similar burdens and those who have no one to pray for them. Offer a concrete act of charity if you are able. A patient word, a hidden sacrifice, or help freely given can become part of your prayer. Ask God to make your concern for others generous and sincere.

Day 9

Trust in God's Will

As this novena ends, continue to place your trust in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. God may grant the grace you seek in the way you expect, or His answer may unfold differently. Faith does not depend on receiving immediate results. It rests upon the goodness of the Father revealed in Christ. Thank God for hearing every sincere prayer. Ask Padre Pio to keep interceding for you and to help you persevere in grace. Leave your petition with the Lord and remain attentive to His will.

Closing prayer

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of You, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your tender Mother and ours. Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us. St. Pio of Pietrelcina, pray for us.
